Deep Time - Projection Mapping

back to all projects

On Sunday the 7th August the Standard Life Opening Event: Deep Time wowed an audience of 27,000 watching an animation created by 59 Productions, celebrating 350 million years of Edinburgh's history, projection mapped onto Edinburgh Castle.

This was a once in a lifetime spectacle and we're proud to have played a part in making it happen.

Working in partnership with 59 Productions and mclcreate has been a fantastic experience from start to finish. This was a challenging project and we couldn't have asked for more help and support from the festival team.

After 160 hours of pre-programming the Blue-i crew arrived onsite a week before show day to rig 42 Panasonic PT-DZ21K projectors and three 4X4 D3 Pro media servers. The projectors were rigged in stacks of 3 on top of one of the buildings opposite the castle and all equipment had to be craned up to the rooftops.

The projectors, supplied in partnership with mclcreate, delivered 840,000 lumens of light output to transform the western face of the castle and bedrock.

Ed Cooper of Blue-i Theatre Technology says of the event: "This was a once in a lifetime spectacle and we're proud to have played a part in making it happen. Working in partnership with 59 Productions and mclcreate has been a fantastic experience from start to finish. The free event signalled the start of Edinburgh’s festival season, with a unique soundtrack provided by Scottish rock band, Mogwai. Each year the Edinburgh International Festival welcomes the most exciting cultural performers from the around the world across dance, art, music and theatre.
